In the club's first year of playing
and representing volleyball in N.S.W, there have been seven players from Westside that were selected to play in the (A.V.L)
Australian Volleyball League for other clubs within the state.
This is an inaugural club championship
in which, the best known clubs from around the country, featuring current & ex national & state players, fighting
it out to become crowned the best club team in the country.
This year there were three AVL teams
from N.S.W, for men and women, they were Kumho Sydney Lions men and women, UTS men and women, Sydney University
women & Bankstown Sports Cedars men. Each club consisted of it’s own SVL players plus many additions from various
clubs in the state, to help strengthen each team. Westside on contrary were amongst the star additions to these clubs..
These were the players that were selected
to play A.V.L for their respective teams;
Kumho
Sydney Lions Men: Gamdan El Miski, Ibal El Miski, Nifae Sita
U.T.S
Men: Jeffery Skinner, Douglas Skinner
Bankstown Sports Cedars Men: Shannon Flexman,
Francis Uso
University of Sydney Women: Amy Uso
All selected individuals made a huge
impact on their AVL teams, and were all part of the starting line up on each team. This evidently shows the depth of great
talent that is vested in the Westside club.
Two of the Westside players, Shannon
Flexman & Francis Uso eventually went on to represent Bankstown Sports Cedars in the Finals of the AVL which was hosted
in Melbourne. Their team did extremely well, with two hard fought final games,
and came away with an AVL Bronze medal.
Westside
is hoping to gain enough sponsorship to be able to participate in AVL at a future stage. But for now, the focus is on winning
the SVL titles that eluded it’s men’s division one and women’s junior teams this year, in what were two
very close five set thrilling grand final matches in August this year. Not bad for first time comers to SVL. The coming New
Year will bring many new surprises and future goals which Westside will look forward to accomplishing.
